Monday Dec 20th – Guns, Germs and Steel

Adventures for today included a visit to the Musee des Armies (L’hotel des Invalides), Napoleon’s Tomb and the Eiffel Tower. Guns for the museum, germs for the constant wearing of masks, and steel for the Eiffel Tower.

The Musee des Armies is a military history museum, and France is proud of it’s long military history. We saw implements of war from neolithic times to the second world war. Many suits of armor, many cannon and many swords (which Elizabeth especially enjoyed).

Napoleon’s tomb is adjacent, so that was our next stop. A magnificent stone building with incredible marble detail and a massive gold leaf dome pays homage to a man known for humility.

We had planned a trip to the Archeologic Crypt under Notre Dame, but it turns out to be closed on Mondays… So we ‘made do’ by walking along the Seine, enjoying the views of Notre Dame and the surrounding area, and shopping. Rebecca got a scarf.

we grabbed a quick bite (pastries and other yummies at a boulangerie), enjoyed another small holiday market (they’re all over) and then zipped over to the Eiffel tower. The weather is cold and it was a little breezy up high, but from the moment we emerged from the metro the Eiffel Tower was still a great experience.

After finishing at the Eiffel Tower, we simply walked home. The Champs Elysees is all lit up and decorated for the holidays.

Superb picture of Josh at the Eiffel Tower.
You all look great in your Eiffel Tower group picture. Where are your berets with your names on them?
It must have been VERY cold for Sam to wear long pants.
